KBTR-V7 Paper Run Week 1: The Bot Said No — And That's the Point

One week in. Zero BTC exposure. Zero drawdown. $10,000 still $10,000.

That is KBTR-V7’s first week in the paper run — and it is exactly what the strategy was designed to do.

What KBTR-V7 Actually Does

KBTR-V7 is Key’s BTC Trend Rotation bot. The idea is simple: hold BTC when the trend is up, hold USDC when it is not. The strategy uses two exponential moving averages calculated on weekly bars — a 6-week fast EMA and a 20-week slow EMA. When the fast crosses above the slow, the bot buys BTC. When it crosses back below, the bot exits to cash.

It does not try to time entries perfectly. It does not scalp intraday moves. It reads the macro regime — bearish or bullish — and positions accordingly. That is the entire strategy.

The KBTR-V7.1 strategy passed all six pre-registered validation gates on April 28, 2026 before going live in the paper run. Sharpe 0.790, max drawdown −36.1%, +130.1% return over three years, 60% win rate. The 30-day paper run started immediately after.

Week 1 State: Regime = USDC

At the first weekly check (Monday, 2026-05-04), the EMA picture looks like this:

MetricValue
BTC close$78,569.59
EMA(6w) — fast$74,606.54
EMA(20w) — slow$77,960.82
SignalUSDC (fast < slow)
Equity$10,000.00
Drawdown0.0%

Fast EMA is below slow EMA. That means the trend is classified as bearish. The bot is sitting in USDC. It has not touched BTC. It has not lost a dollar.

Why Doing Nothing Is the Strategy

This is the part that trips people up. KBTR-V7 sitting in cash during a bearish regime is not the bot failing — it is the bot executing exactly as designed.

The strategy was backtested over three years of BTC price history. Its edge comes from two things: catching the big BTC bull runs when the EMA crossover fires, and not holding BTC through prolonged downtrends. The cash periods are not wasted time — they are the mechanism that prevents drawdowns from compounding.

In a buy-and-hold BTC strategy, every down week eats into your capital. KBTR-V7 exits before those weeks happen (or shortly after the regime turns). The cost is missing out on false recoveries that reverse. The reward is being at $10,000 when BTC is going sideways or down, rather than being at $9,200 and waiting for a recovery.

Week 1 delivered that reward cleanly. BTC closed at $78,569. The bot was in cash. Capital: $10,000.00. Drawdown: 0.0%.

The EMA Gap Is Narrowing

Here is what makes Week 1 interesting: the gap between the fast and slow EMA is closing.

EMA(6w) is $74,606. EMA(20w) is $77,960. The gap is $3,354 — roughly 4.3% of BTC’s current price. Fast needs to climb about $3,354 to cross above slow.

That gap has been wider. As BTC has moved back above $78,000 in recent weeks, the fast EMA has been pulling upward. If BTC continues to hold above the $78K range — or push higher — the fast EMA will accelerate upward toward the slow EMA.

A crossover is not imminent. At the current EMA velocities, this could take several more weeks. But it is not a distant concept either. The trend rotation machinery is approaching a decision point.

When the crossover fires, KBTR-V7 will enter a BTC position at the close of that weekly bar. From that point forward, it holds until the slow EMA crosses back above the fast — signalling the trend has turned bearish again. In backtesting, those long holds are where the strategy generates most of its return.

What to Watch in Week 2

The single thing that matters is the EMA gap. Specifically:

The strategy does not predict which of these happens. It just responds to what does. That is the design.

Paper Run Context

KBTR-V7 is a 30-day paper run tracking Key’s regime-detection approach in live market conditions. Paper capital: $10,000. Weekly check-ins every Monday. The paper run validates that the bot’s live behaviour matches its backtested logic before any real capital is committed.

Week 1 result: matched exactly. Regime = bearish, bot = USDC, drawdown = zero.

Next check: Monday, 2026-05-11. By then we will have four more weekly bars of BTC data and a clearer picture of whether the EMA crossover is accelerating or stalling.
